I've been thinking about starting this newspaper for many years out here, and I am so excited
that it has finally become a reality. If you are reading this, you know that I have already
accomplished one of my goals. As I have spoken with some of the community about creating
The Grizzly Detail, I have encountered many questions, comments, puzzled looks and looks of
concern. I will try to use the rest of this column to tell you a little bit about my family and me, and
answer a few of the questions I have encountered along the way to this publication.

Who am I? Now I am known mainly as Hayden and Ellie's mom or Ben's wife. Hayden is my
eleven-year-old son and Ellie is my eight-year-old daughter. I'm quite sure that if you don't know
them already, you will know them better with each coming issue. Ben is my husband of 20
years. He isn't a Brewer graduate, but he spent time working there in the 80's as the licensed
athletic trainer and teacher, and I think he has attended enough of my class reunions to at least
qualify as an honorary ex. Although he is from South-central Texas, he has lived in the White
Settlement/West Point area for 24 years. Ben has a Bachelor’s Degree in Education and a
Masters in Educational Administration including his principal’s certification. He has been
working with me every step of the way while dreaming of starting this paper. He is working on
ads, marketing and distribution, story-writing and picture taking, to name a few of his
contributions to this paper. As for me, I am a Brewer class of '81 graduate and have lived in the
White Settlement/West Point area all of my life. I have a degree in journalism and English and
have been a teacher at Aledo High School for 20 years. Many people have asked me why I
haven't come back to teach at Brewer since I have never left the area, and I can't say I haven't
given it serious thought from time to time. When I graduated from college, I did come back and
substitute at the middle school and the high school, and I taught summer school there for
several years. That is how I met my husband; he was working there at that time. To make a long
story short (probably not short enough for many of you), I applied at Brewer during that time, but
nothing was available and Paula Hope advised me to try Aledo, since they had experienced a
large turnover. I did and I have been there ever since. I currently teach journalism and advise the
newspaper staff and the yearbook staff. I actually consider it lucky that I never came back to
teach for the WSISD, because then starting a community paper might cause a conflict of
interest. For those of you who have lived here for a while you might remember my softball days
on the Mustangs and the Pacesetters. I played second base with Cindy Pederson (class of '80)
at Pitcher and her Dad, Wendell Pederson as head coach. Those days in the White Settlement
ballpark are truly some of my happiest childhood memories.

Enough of memory lane for now; let's address some of those concerns I encountered. Why call
the paper The Grizzly Detail? Will it have a lot of juicy gossip in it or something? I hope not. I
want the paper to be detail oriented, thus the name. I also want it to cover the ENTIRE area that
encompasses the WSISD, so I added 'Grizzly' as in 'bear' to the title. I like the full affect of the
double entendre, too. A journalist should be objective and fair, and deliver balanced articles
written after researching several sources. This is what we hope to accomplish with The Grizzly
Detail. Our first issue was a challenge as we tried to establish contacts and open doors for a
then, non-existent newspaper. We hope that as we grow as a respected source of information,
we will be able to bring you real news in a format that you respect.

Lastly I want to say that I hope this paper becomes a way for our community to speak to each
other. I want the paper to be a platform for the community to voice its concerns and opinions
about issues and situations that affect all of us locally. I think it could bring us even closer if we
know that we aren't alone in our concerns and maybe together we can solve some problems.

If you have something on your mind, and you want to see what others are thinking about it, write
a letter to the editor. Information for sending these letters, news tips or any other inquiries can
be sent to the address on the 'contact us' link on this page. I'm looking forward to serving you,
the community, with The Grizzly Detail.

Sincerely,

Cheryl Wilbur Posey
